On
October 20, 1859, John Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont. He attended
the local schools and graduated from the University of Vermont in
1879. He lived to be 92 years old and died on June 1, 1952.
His legacy is important to Burlingtonians and for people throughout
the nation and the world. He believed that respecting the uniqueness
of one another would allow for a deeper understanding between people.
This was the essence of Dewey's philosophy of education and the basis
of democratic principles.
Our country was founded on these values. And while we are living in
a time of flux, change, doubt and uncertainty, this is the very time
to live our values with great courage and creativity.
